Former Conservative chairman Sir Jake Berry has launched a scathing attack on the “establishment blob” who he believes are trying to destroy Brexit and brought Boris Johnson down.

Despite threats of disciplinary action from Downing Street, the Tory big hitter and Boris loyalist has come out with criticisms clearly directed at the Priveleges Committee which concluded Mr Johnson lied intentionally to Parliament over Partygate.

Mr Johnson himself branded the committee a “kangaroo court” whose purpose was to underline Brexit and Sir Jake’s Tweet reflected that sentiment.

The former party chairman, who also founded the influential Northern Research Group of Northern Tory MPs, said: “You voted for Brexit – the establishment blocked it.

“You voted for @BorisJohnson – the establishment has forced him out.

“Who is in charge here… The voters or the blob?

“#Blobonomics #BorisJohnson”

The intervention has come on another dramaticv day following Mr Johnson’s announcement that he was quitting yesterday.

The former Prime Minister had followed ex-Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries to the exit door after she had been denied a peerage which she had been nominated for in his resignation honours list.

Then this morning another close ally Selby MP Nigel Adams quit as an MP and Express.co.uk has revealed that another four could leave the Commons handing Rishi Sunak a nightmare of six by-elections.

Among others who could resign are former Chancellor Nadhium Zahawi, who has been speaking to friends about what to do but issued a statement denying he is going, and former Cabinet Minister and COP26 chairman Alok Sharma, who is said to be 50/50.

Sharma was also denied a peerage.

Don’t miss…

Sir Jake is also a Boris Johnson ally but was hosting Mr Sunak at the NRG conference in Doncaster yesterday when the drama began with Ms Dorries’ resignation.

The Prime Minister had just taken the stage to address northern Conservatives.

The former chairman is unlikely to be the last to come out to defy the Prime Minister and ignore threats of being reported to the privileges committee.

Former cabinet ministers are among those understood to have been threatened to stay silent.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you.
