Sir Keir Starmer is facing a threat to his leadership, amid growing anger over his plan to keep the two-child benefit cap.

The coup has been floated by a group of former advisers who worked for Sir Keir and former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

According to the i paper, they now believe the Labour leader should be overthrown because of his stance on the welfare policy.

They have argued that the policy is part of a wider conservatism that will push away traditional Labour voters.

The group were planning to approach Ed Miliband to trigger the challenge.

However, the former Labour leader is said to believe the idea is “nuts” and that Sir Keir has his full loyalty.

A source close to Mr Miliband told the i: “We wouldn’t give these people the time of day.

“It’s absolutely bonkers because you could not find someone more loyal to Keir than Ed.”

They added: “It’s completely nuts.”

On Sunday, Sir Keir told the BBC that Labour is “not changing” the two-child benefit cap.

The policy has been widely criticised as unfair and ineffective, with critics claiming it is a driver of child poverty.

Sir Keir has drawn criticism from within the party since making the commitment to the policy.

Meg Hillier, Labour MP for Hackney South and Shoreditch, and chair of the Commons Public Accounts Committee, told the BBC’s Westminster Hour: “Well, I was never comfortable about having the child benefit cap come in … personally, I’d be lobbying for a lifting of that.”

Meanwhile, Rosie Duffield, Labour MP for Canterbury – who is on the centre-right of the party – hit out at the policy commitment, describing it as “one of the most unpleasant pieces of legislation ever to have been passed in the UK”.
