{"id":134990,"date":"2023-12-05T23:39:25","date_gmt":"2023-12-05T23:39:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fin2me.com\/?p=134990"},"modified":"2023-12-05T23:39:25","modified_gmt":"2023-12-05T23:39:25","slug":"boris-to-come-out-fighting-at-covid-inquiry-grilling-i-got-big-calls-right","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fin2me.com\/politics\/boris-to-come-out-fighting-at-covid-inquiry-grilling-i-got-big-calls-right\/","title":{"rendered":"Boris  to come out fighting at Covid Inquiry grilling: &#8216;I got big calls right&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.images.express.co.uk\/img\/dynamic\/139\/590x\/secondary\/5101218.jpg?r=1701817272294\"><\/p>\n<p>The former prime minister will steer clear of personal attacks despite the onslaught of abuse he has faced from some former colleagues but will give a robust defence of the UK\u2019s \u00adperformance during the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>A source close to the ex-PM said: \u201cThe Government got the big calls right on Covid and, under Boris\u2019s \u00adleadership, the UK had the fastest \u00advaccine rollout in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoris got us out of lockdown quicker than other European countries and got the economy moving again quicker than other nations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UK did not perform the worst in Covid contrary to some claims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Johnson faces two days of \u00adintensive questioning by top barristers about how he led the Government\u2019s response to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>It is thought he will repeat apologies made for the shortcomings of the government but will defend his record of getting major decisions right.<\/p>\n<p>But it is understood he believes the inquiry should be looking at wider issues around Covid than lockdowns.<\/p>\n<p>They include whether the virus originated in a Chinese laboratory, the economic effects of lockdown and the impact on children.<\/p>\n<p>The former premier is expected to tell the probe he followed the advice of scientists.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the inquiry his ex-chief adviser Dominic Cummings claimed Mr Johnson asked scientists whether Covid could be destroyed by blowing a \u201cspecial hair dryer\u201d up noses.<\/p>\n<p>He also alleged Mr Johnson said he would rather \u201clet the bodies pile high\u201d than hit the economy with further restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>Extracts from the diaries of former chief scientific adviser to the Government Sir Patrick Vallance \u00adsuggested Mr Johnson wanted to let Covid \u201crip\u201d. And Cabinet Secretary Simon Case said Mr Johnson and his inner circle were \u201cbasically feral\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Johnson is likely to highlight actions taken to ensure the NHS did not collapse. A spokesman for the former prime minister said: \u201cBoris Johnson has fully cooperated with the Inquiry\u2019s disclosure process and has submitted hundreds of pages of material.
