Mr Javid desperately scrambled to justify the move as a “very Conservative thing to do” as he set about a defence of Ms Burley’s attack on the party’s decision to hike taxes to cover the cost of the growing social care crisis in Britain despite the move smashing a manifesto pledge. It comes as Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Tuesday that Britons will pay millions more a year in National Insurance tax to cover the cost of social care through a new “health and social care levy” to tackle the social care crisis ignored by successive governments for years. The tax hike will see Britons and employers paying an additional 1.25 percent in national insurance a year.

Kay Burley said: “I read in the papers it is the highest taxes since the Second World War

“Are you sure you’re in the right party!?”

Mr Javid hit back: “Yes I am sure of that!

“I think what we have announced in the last 24 hours actually is a very Conservative thing to do! We are committed as a party to the NHS.

“I want the NHS to be there for everyone, a world class health service free at the point of use, paid through general taxation.”

The Health Secretary added how he would not tolerate the NHS waiting list soaring to an estimated 13 million in three years time and insisted something had to be done.

He added: “I think the British public understand that.

“Similarly with adult social care, some people have this risk of catastrophic care of costs, it is not acceptable where one in seven people have to pay almost £100,000 for their care. Therefore I think that is a very Conservative thing to do.”
