Suella Braverman is looking to fast-track deportations of asylum seekers from countries deemed safe in a bid to get on top of the Channel migrant crisis. The Home Secretary is thought to be looking at plans to draw up a list of “safe” countries from which asylum claims are usually rejected.
All those arriving in the UK from countries on the list will have their claims processed within just days.
Unsuccessful claimants will be rapidly deported with no right to appeal.
At the moment, the large majority of asylum seekers are housed in hotels while awaiting the outcome of their applications.
The process is often subject to delay and to a number of legal appeals, taking an average time of more than a year.
Ministers are spending £7million a day on hotels to house those await to hear the outcome of their application.
The proposals under consideration, first reported by The Times, would replicate a policy similar to the one used by the Government nearly 20 years ago.
New Labour imposed a system whereby asylum claims from countries on a so-called “white-list” were dealt with within ten days.
Countries on the list would include all those in the EU, Albania, Macedonia, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, India, Mongolia, South Africa, South Korea and some South American countries.
Albania has made up over a quarter of all claims of asylum from those crossing the English Channel so far this year.
Under the plan asylum claims by people from countries deemed safe would only be considered if they were claiming persecution by the state.

Claims of persecution by gangs or terrorist groups would be automatically rejected.
Details of the proposals have emerged amid growing pressure on Ms Braverman to get a grip on the number of people making the dangerous crossing over the English Channel.
More than 43,000 people have entered Britain after making the unsafe crossing so far this year according to official figures.
Yesterday Tory grandee David Davis led a group of more than 50 MPs pressing the Government to make changes to allow quicker deportations for arrivals from “safe countries”.
He said: “I want to protect the asylum system for people who really need it.”
A government spokeswoman said: “We have made clear that there is no one single solution to stop the increase in dangerous crossings.
“We have also made clear that we will continue to use every tool at our disposal to deter illegal migration.
“We are expediting the removal of individuals by agreeing tailored bilateral returns agreements with partners like Albania, elevating it to a key priority for our foreign policy.”
