The former Conservative party head of communications took to social media to pay her respects shortly after Mr Johnson made a statement outside No10.

The Duke of Edinburgh passed away at Windsor Castle this morning at the age of 99.

After over 70 years of public service, Ms Symonds expressed her sadness at the news and joined millions of Brits in making their own tributes to the Prince.

She wrote on Twitter: “So very sad to hear of the passing of HRH, the Duke of Edinburgh.

“An incredible life devoted to the Queen, his family and our country.

“Thoughts and prayers with Her Majesty and the Royal Family.”

He tribute was posted just minutes after Mr Johnson made a statement of his own, speaking live outside No10 as he led the nation in mourning the loss of the much-loved royal.

The Prime Minister paid tribute to the Duke for having inspired millions through the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, for pioneering the modernisation of the monarchy, and for his active service in World War 2.
