Philippe Lamberts MEP told Channel 4 News he predicts football fans will celebrate Brexit as being one of the reasons for a potential England win on Sunday. Mr Lamberts added that coronavirus cases across Europe were seeing a rise and agreed it was irresponsible for host countries to allow large amounts of supporters in stadiums. The MEP also refused to throw his backing behind Italy or England but said Italy was a good defensive team who capitalises on mistakes which will help when they play at the Euro 2020 final on Sunday.

Appearing on Channel 4 News, presenter Matt Frei asked how Europeans were reacting to images of Wembley Stadium being “packed to the rafters” following the England vs Denmark game.

Wembley was estimated to have had around 60,000 attendees during the game in a stadium that has roughly 90,000 capacity.

Mr Lamberts replied: “Well, let me say that I am a bit worried in general terms because I have a sense that people have been deprived so long of their basic freedoms and now they want to enjoy them fully.

“But what we see, not just in the United Kingdom but also in Portugal, in Spain, but also increasingly in France and Germany, is that there’s a resurgence of the virus.
