Ministers eye up slashing EU red tape to save businesses £1bn a year

Jacob Rees-Mogg defends Retained EU Law Bill

Ministers are considering overhauling an EU directive to save businesses £1billion a year and capitalise on Brexit freedoms. The EU Working Time Directive limits the amount of time most people work to 48 hours a week on average, including overtime.

But the Department for Business and Trade is looking at removing the requirement on companies to record the number of hours staff members work, the Telegraph reports.

A Government spokesperson said: “This Government has no intention of abandoning our strong record on workers’ rights, which are amongst the highest in the world.

“The Retained EU Law Bill will make sure that the UK’s rules and regulations best serve the interests of the country as a whole and support workers and businesses to build a thriving economy.”
