Angus Robertson has been appointed as Cabinet Secretary for the Constitution, External Affairs and Culture. The portfolio covers constitutional policy, cross-government coordination of European and wider external relations, including post-Brexit relations.

Mr Robertson is a former SNP Westminster leader and was returned to Holyrood earlier this month as the MSP for Edinburgh Central.

As part of the role, Mr Robertson will undertake work to bring forward a draft independence referendum Bill to give people in Scotland the “right to decide their future once the current health crisis is over.”

The draft Bill was published by SNP ministers last month with Ministers saying a vote will offer Scotland the choice of who is best placed to lead the country’s post-pandemic recovery.

The Scottish Independence Referendum Bill stipulates the next Scottish Parliament should decide the timing of any referendum.

The draft bill states the question asked should be the same as at the 2014 referendum – “Should Scotland be an independent country?”.
