What is Earth Day?

Since its inception in 1970, more than 190 countries have joined in on the event, going to great lengths to move toward a more sustainable planet. Its inception marked the start of the modern environmental movement, ultimately becoming a day of action aiming to alter environmentally harmful human behavior and create global changes in favor of Mother Earth.

The best eco-friendly products to buy on sale

Regardless of whether you’re in the market for a new pair of spring shoes (check out No. 8 on our list!) that are made from recycled materials or to make some swaps to ensure your daily routine is more earth-friendly (see the skincare products and reusable produce bags below), we’ve got you covered.

Ahead, scroll through to discover 10 awesome eco-friendly products you can get on sale right now.

1. A 35% price cut: These highly-rated reusable produce bags

Snag these eco-friendly produce bags for your next grocery trip. (Photo: Amazon)

When you head to the grocery store, chances are, if you’re picking up produce, you’ll be using single-use plastic bags that aren’t too kind to the environment. Although they can be recycled, most end up on streets or in trees and oceans and reportedly take anywhere from 20 to 1,000 years to break up. In fact, according to a blog post written by the Columbia Climate School, “the single-use of any bag is the worst possible choice” you could make when it comes to helping the environment.

To lessen your plastic footprint, you can invest in this five-pack of Naturally Sensible reusable produce bags, once $19.95 and now $12.97, for a 35% markdown. Each bag is made from nylon mesh that can easily be scanned, transported and used time and time again. They also boast a drawstring closure, so you won’t have to worry about your produce falling out as you grocery shop. According to a 4.7-star rating from more than 4,200 Amazon shoppers, customers were absolutely thrilled with these eco-friendly staples, with many noting that they were well-made and got the job done.

2. Save 30%: This 32-ounce Hydro Flask tumbler

This Hydro Flask is loved by REI customers. (Photo: REI)

On average, Americans use a whopping 50 billion plastic bottles each year, but only about 23% of them are recycled. The other 38 billion end up in landfills, oceans and streets and can even take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade. Investing in a reusable bottle is a super-easy way to decrease your carbon footprint, and Hydro Flasks are an awesome place to start (the brand’s 32-ounce wide-mouth bottle, $49.95, is one of our favorites!).

If you want to save some dough, though, you can nab the Hydro Flask 32-ounce tumbler at REI for $27.73, which is 30% from its original price of $39.95. (Note that you can get it for slightly less at Leaf in Creek.) Complete with a 4.6-star rating from more than 50 REI customers, this pick was adored by shoppers for its versatility and ability to keep beverages hot or cold for extended periods of time (in our tests, a similar 18-ounce water bottle, $39.99, which features the same double-wall vacuum insulation, kept water ice cold for 24 hours). The tumbler’s 18/10 stainless-steel construction, meanwhile, is BPA-free. Additionally, the lid, which one buyer dubbed as the “best drinking lid ever,” is made from recyclable polypropylene #5 (also free from BPA, phthalate and toxins).

3. Half off: These cloth face masks with rave reviews

These Everlane facial coverings would be a great addition to your collection. (Photo: Everlane)

In the age of COVID-19, facial coverings are a basic necessity for leaving the house. However, disposable surgical masks, which are made from harsh polymers (polypropylene and polycarbonate, for instance), have already been identified by a study published in the Science of the Total Environment journal as “a significant source of plastics and plastic particle pollution in the environment.” Sadly, when disposed of incorrectly, these masks can often land in dumpsites, oceans and landfills.

Enter: Reusable facial coverings, which are an excellent solution to ridding your household of single-use masks. Right now, you can head to Everlane, a sustainable clothing company with transparent farm-to-factory processes, to nab a three-pack of The 100% Human face masks, once $18 and now half off for $9. Complete with a 4.56-star rating from nearly 250 Everlane customers, buyers were happy with the fit and feel, noting that the stylish patterned cotton jersey fabric was super comfortable. Although they are not FDA-approved, they boast elastic ear loops and double-layered woven material that are designed for optimal safety.

4. $200 off: This Reviewed-approved mattress

This environment-friendly mattress is loved by shoppers. (Photo: Green Avocado Mattress)

Believe it or not, the mattress you’re currently sleeping on probably isn’t too environmentally friendly. Many spring beds are treated with flame retardants, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which contribute to global warming and CFC emissions in the atmosphere. If you’re devoted to promoting sustainability (even while you snooze), you can shop at Avocado Green Mattress, a B-corp climate neutral brand, where you’ll currently save $200 on its vegan and organic beds.

The Avocado latex mattress, for instance, normally $1,199, is on sale from $999 when you use promo code EARTH at checkout through Monday, April 26. As the brand’s first-ever all-foam latex mattress, it’s also the most sustainable bed the company has ever manufactured. It’s 100% organic-certified, non-toxic and biodegradable, and boasts nine inches of latex that are designed to limit motion transfer and create contoured targeted zones for your body. While we’ve yet to test out this particular mattress, we did feature the company’s original bed, the Avocado Green mattress (priced from $999), in our roundup of the best mattresses-in-a-box, and enjoyed its stand-out cooling ability and adequate comfort level. With any mattress purchase, you’ll even receive a 365-night trial period.

5. Save 20% sitewide: This super-conscious skincare brand

We adored this moisturizer in testing. (Photo: Cocokind)

Right now, your bathroom is probably littered with single-use plastic bottles. You may even be using—brace yourself—skincare products that contain microplastics in their formulas. According to a blog post published by Beat The Micro Bead, “microplastics have been intentionally added to cosmetic products since the 1960s.” These tiny pieces can easily pollute the environment without most of us even realizing it. To combat these ingredients, you can check out cocokind, a “conscious skincare” brand that prioritizes sustainable packaging and materials in its products.

We’ve tested out a few of the brand’s products, including this Texture Smoothing cream, once $20 and now $16, and were seriously impressed with its lightweight, hydrating and cooling formula. In fact, our tester said it was the best product in her medicine cabinet! This everyday moisturizer claims to reduce the look of enlarged pores, fine lines and rough patches while also restoring density and hydration to your skin—and, according to our tester, it was able to help clear up irritation along her cheeks and chin.

6. Down 17%: This incredible reusable notebook

Taking notes has never looked so sustainable. (Photo: Amazon)

As much as we adore stationery and journals, they unfortunately create a ton of waste. Even if you properly recycle your notebook (to do so, you should remove the front and back covers and spiral bound, according to Recycle Nation), plastic covers aren’t biodegradable, and recycling centers don’t accept paper that’s highly pigmented (a.k.a., sheets that have been written on). Thankfully, Rocketbook came up with an awesome solution by creating a smart reusable notebook—and it’s currently on sale at Amazon in the black hue for for $24.98, falling 17% from its retail price of $29.99. (You can also nab a smaller one in blue at Staples for $20.89.)

Complete with a 4.5-star rating from more than 48,000 Amazon customers, this smart notebook is pretty revolutionary. The 36-page dotted journal comes with a Pilot Fri Xion pen that can easily be wiped off from this notebook’s patented, reusable material using the included microfiber cloth. Most excitingly, though, you can upload notes, journal entries and writing to cloud services, such as Google Docs and Dropbox, with the free accompanying app, so you’ll never actually lose anything. One recent buyer dubbed this smart notebook as “literal magic,” while another claimed that it “will change your life.”

7. A 19% price cut: This 10-pack of reusable cotton rounds

These reusable makeup removers are a big win for the planet. (Photo: Amazon)

Cotton rounds can assist with everything from removing nail polish to applying skincare products, but, like many other single-use products, they create a lot of unnecessary waste that can be avoided. According to the World Wildlife Fund, “cotton cultivation severely degrades soil quality,” since production often requires pesticides, which harms nearby water, biodiversity and the health of farmers. Over the past 70 years, cultivation has also caused cotton to deplete land resources in many areas.

If you’re looking to reduce your cotton use, reusable cotton rounds are a great place to start. This 20-pack from Amazon normally retails for $15.99, but you can currently nab ‘em for $12.99 for a 19% discount. The zero-waste rounds are made from USDA-certified organic bamboo cotton, making them 100% biodegradable and compostable. With your purchase, you’ll also receive a drawstring laundry bag and a storage container. They’ve garnered a 4.6-star rating from more than 14,500 Amazon customers, who were absolutely thrilled with the top-quality construction, noting that they’re super easy to clean and feel baby-soft.

8. Down 40%: These sneakers that are made from recycled water bottles

These sneakers are stylish and earth-friendly. (Photo: Nordstrom)

In honor of Earth Day, Nordstrom has launched a sustainable style initiative to showcase tons of apparel and accessories that are environmentally friendly. For instance, these Dr. Scholl’s Herzog women’s recycled knit sneakers, once $99.95, are currently on sale for $59.96 for a whopping 40% markdown—and, best of all, they’re made from recycled materials. The engineered-knit upper is constructed from recycled water bottles, while the interior lining was designed from harvested beech tree pulp and the soles from recycled rice husks. Nordstrom customers described these kicks as “super comfortable” and “super cute,” plus, with every purchase, Dr. Scholl’s will donate one tree to Trees for the Future, a nonprofit organization that provides families the opportunity to learn about sustainable farming techniques.

9. Save $100: This super small composter

Compost with the touch of a button. (Photo: Vitamix)

Composting is a super easy way to help the planet. By combining organic wastes, such as food scraps, yard trimmings and manure, you can reduce methane emissions, a.k.a., a “potent greenhouse gas.” While getting into composting can be a rather intimidating feat, it doesn’t have to be.

As part of Best Buy’s 4-day Earth Week sale, live through the end of today, April 22, you can nab the Vitamix FoodCycler FC-50 composter. It typically retails at $399.99, but you can grab it for $299.99, saving you a whopping $100. According to the company, this impressive machine is the smallest powered food waste recycler in the world—and it’s even able to create fertilizer soil from food scraps in less than 24 hours. We loved that it effectively assisted with reducing greenhouse emissions by helping folks compost with ease. Additionally, it was incredibly easy to use in testing, since all you have to do is plug it in, press a button and let it do its thing.

10. $30 off: The Google Nest smart thermostat

Not only Wifi friendly, the Google Nest is easy to use and set-up. (Photo: Google/Amazon)

Through the end of today, April 22, you can save on one of the best smart thermostats that we’ve ever tested, the Google Nest. Normally $129.99, it’s currently discounted by $30, dropping the price down to $99.99 at Amazon. When we tested the Nest, we loved its energy-saving setting Eco Mode, Home/Away Assist and scheduling features, all of which will help you to lower your energy footprint by conserving heat when you’re not at home—and save on costs. Our smart home expert Rachel Murphy also noted that, with the Nest, in addition to setting your thermostat to a specific temperature for a set amount of time, you can start preheating or cooling your home before you get there. This baby can even tell you how long it will take to heat up and when it’s time to change your air filter!
