Liz Truss should “scrap not suspend” green levies, according to a new poll of Express.co.uk readers. Last week Prime Minister Liz Truss unveiled a new energy support package to help Britons through the cost of living crisis and manage spiralling energy bills.

She announced that household energy bills will remain frozen at £2,500 for two years from October.

The Government is expected to borrow £100billion to pay for the scheme.

Ms Truss has previously pledged to reduce energy bills further by suspending the green energy levy.

Green levies are an environmental charge which is used to fund green energy policies, improvements to energy efficiency and long-term energy security.

The charge makes up around eight percent of the average energy bills and scrapping it could save households £150 a year.

In a poll that ran from midday on Wednesday, September 7, to 1pm on Tuesday, August 13, Express.co.uk asked readers: “Should Liz Truss suspend the green energy levy to reduce bills?”

A total of 3,813 readers responded, with the overwhelming majority, 97 percent (3,703 people) answered “yes”, Ms Truss should suspend the green energy levy.

A further three percent (103 people) said “no”, she should not, while just seven people said they did not know either way.

In the hundreds of comments left below the accompanying article, readers felt strongly about the green levy being suspended to reduce energy bills.

Many commented that the Government’s green levies needed to be dropped, with one reader, username Stacpollaidh, writing that it should be “scrapped not suspended!”

Username grimm said: “She should not suspend the green levy, she should get rid of it completely.”

Username macaron said: “They should scrap the green agenda altogether & get drilling, fracking and mining.”

Similarly, username firebird80 wrote: “It should never have been inflicted in the first place.”

Other readers shared a similar argument with username Norfolk Boy commenting: “The whole net-zero thing needs to be dropped until we have sufficient energy supplies.”

And username sam the man said: “This levy and tax should not be suspended it should be scrapped.

“Why should the UK public have to pay when other countries who are bigger polluters than the UK do nothing.”

Energy UK suggested that green levies should be moved to general taxation to make it “fairer” for those on lower incomes.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon argued that halting green levies was the “wrong approach” and would have a “marginal” impact on household bills.

Last month she said: “I think we’ve got to be careful in the face of this crisis not to reach for the wrong approach, or for approaches that politicians might make sound significant but aren’t.”

Martin Lewis, the founder of Money Saving Expert, likened the suspension of green levies to “sticking a plaster on a gaping wound”.
