Nicola Sturgeon told Sky News that the SNP securing a majority victory in the Holyrood election was a “very long shot” due to the proportional representation system in place in Scotland. The SNP leader added that her party would have accomplished an “extraordinary achievement” by securing a fourth consecutive election win.

Ms Sturgeon said: “Regardless of the outcome of this election, it is a real victory for democracy and something we should all take great heart from.”

She was then asked: “How confident are you of getting a majority?”

Scotland’s First Minister replied: “A majority has always been a very long shot.

“The Holyrood system is a proportional representation system.

“In 2011, we effectively broke that system so it would be good to do but I have never taken it for granted.

“It has always been on a knife-edge, a small number of votes and a small number of seats.

“We will wait and see how the votes pan out over today and tomorrow.

“I am feeling extremely confident that we are on track in the SNP for a fourth consecutive election victory and to have the ability to form a government again.

“That is an extraordinary achievement for any political party.”

Earlier today, Ian Blackford was brutally shut down by Sky’s Adam Boulton as he reminded the SNP’s Westminster leader that only Boris Johnson has the legal authority to grant a second referendum on Scottish independence.

Mr Boulton said: “Nationwide it does look as though Boris Johnson is going to say there has been a strong endorsement of his Conservative Government.

“That will presumably involve him resisting any calls for a second independence referendum.”

Mr Blackford replied: “I hope that there is a very strong message from the people of Scotland that they want to have a say in their future.

“This is about democracy, who has that right to determine our future, is it Boris Johnson in London or is it the people of Scotland?

“It has to be the people of Scotland. Boris Johnson has really got to respect that.”

The Sky News presenter added: “Well, he does have the legal authority not to grant a referendum.”
